Course programme

This course has been devised to help young art students strengthen their portfolios and develop their work. Through a personal project, you will be encouraged to engage with experimentation and generation of ideas, which will be supported by a sound grounding in art and design principles.

Students are free to approach their project in the way they choose. In the past this included painting, drawing, photography, illustration, costume design or mask making.

You should expect to find the focused studio atmosphere an inspiration. Some use this experience of art school in order to help them decide on future study choices. Advice on how to produce a portfolio of artwork and its presentation will be available.

The course encourages the development of a critical approach to the work produced. It aims to help participants boost their confidence in their abilities as they claim greater control and responsibility for the direction that their work takes.

Topics covered

  • Personal project work will encourage you to experiment and be original.
  • Observational drawing and research are included.
  • There will be many opportunities to work across a range of art materials in both two and three dimensions.
  • The range of materials used will relate to the chosen direction of your project.
  • Advice will be given on the materials and methods for two and three dimensional work as required.
  • Research will entail some guided work outside college in a museum, gallery or other location.

Who should take this course?

The course is ideal for those who have recently completed a GCSE in art and design, or those studying art at 'A' of 'AS' level who are thinking of applying for study at an art college at foundation level.

International baccalaureate students aged between 16 and 18 who need to be better equipped to apply to a foundation course in art and design would also benefit from the course.

Some students already on a foundation course have used this course to improve their portfolio for degree application.

Entry requirements: A good command of basic spoken English.

Level: The course is not suited for absolute beginners. It is more appropriate for those already studying art and design and who are aiming to do further studies at a higher level.

Please note: This course is for students aged 16 to 18 years old only
