Who is this course for? This one year course is mainly intended for students wishing to further develop their art and design skills and abilities. The course enables students to make informed decisions and preparations relevant to progression into Art & Design careers or specialist Art Schools and universities. Applications are also welcome from well-motivated mature students with appropriate skills and experience. It is particularly suited to those having completed a course of A or AS levels (including Art or Design) who wish to further their studies in preparation for HE programmes in Art, Design, Craft, Photography, Fashion, etc.
Previous knowledge required: You will need at least one of the following: An A/A2 level supported by a minimum of 3 GCSE's or GNVQ Intermediate in Art & Design OR First Diploma in Art & Design with an appropriate grade. 2 AS levels supported by a minimum of 3 GCSE's OR GNVQ in Art & Design or First Diploma in Art & Design. A BTEC National Diploma in an Art & Design subjcet An AVCE or GNVQ Advanced in Art & Design.
What will I study? The course content is characterised by broad ranging, radical and experimental approaches to Art & Design. It also provides a context in which students can identify strengths and direction through progressive exploration of areas including painting, drawing, sculpture, print-making, 3D design, fashion, textiles, animation, graphics, video, ceramics and historical/contextual studies. The course comprises three stages to the course: Exploratory, Pathway and Confirmatory. Increasingly the course becomes more specialised as students build their portfolios for Higher Education application.
What else will I do? You will have the opportunity to visit galleries, museums and take part in field trips which can include overseas visits. There will be inputs to the course from professional artists and you will be able to take part in live projects and work placements. All students undertake a Certificate in Life Drawing alongside their main studies. All students receive tuition in the Wider Key Skill of Problem Solving at L3 and complete a Business Enterprise Module
How will I be assessed? There will be a combination of examinations and coursework.
What will I achieve? BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Level 3) City & Guilds Certificate in Life Drawing Business Enterprise Unit
What can I do afterwards? Students progress directly to university or are directly employed in art, craft and design businesses locally.
Materials required: Most equipment and materials are provided but an equipment list for small items is available from Student Services.
