Course programme

Course structure

Students will work on a different aspect of the discipline each day, but each activity will be linked by a continuous theme individual to each student. A typical week might be:

Monday: Problem solving, ideation and the visual concept

The students will be allocated a product, event or service to advertise and market. What kind of campaign could you create that would be appropriate for the chosen audience? How can you quickly prototype a concept? How do you visualise your idea in a simple but effective way? You will be introduced to tools that help you come up with ideas and communicate them effectively.

Tuesday: Content creation for social

A short lecture will be given on the changing landscape of marketing and advertising. Each student will then be asked to experiment with various forms of media (graphics, short form videos, memes, quizzes) to tell their own stories.

Wednesday: VR

Students will be asked to expand their ideas around concepts, storytelling and ideation by taking them into VR. There will be introductions to 360, TiltBrush, Blocks, Marvellous Designer and other tools that allow the student to create in virtual environments. A virtual exhibition will be held at the end of the day.

Thursday: Research and investigation

Students will be asked to broaden their knowledge of their object through desk research and discussion. The students will be helped throughout the day and directed to relevant resources in response to their progress. At the end of the day they will be asked to present the 10 most interesting new facts they have learned during the course of the day. A short lecture will follow on the importance of research. Finally, the brief for Friday's project will be given out.

Friday: One-day project

Students will be asked to incorporate all skills learned during the week's activities into this one-day group project centred on their objects. They will use the research from the previous day in reaching creative solutions. Two tutors will be on hand to teach intensively with a presentation taking place at the end of the day.

Students will leave the course having learned how to visually concept their ideas across a range of digital platforms.
