It has been designed to enable students who perhaps need more time to adjust to degree-level study, are not sure which subject they want to pursue, achieved lower than expected grades, or are returning to education.

Students can engage in the study of practical and theoretical subjects that are relevant to their creative disciplines. Our students can build their confidence throughout the programme by engaging with experimental ways of working, design processes, practical workshops, and critical thinking.

About this course

The Arts Foundation Year is designed to open up a pathway to undergraduate study for those who may not have the standard entry requirements for a degree. This can include students not having the required combination of subject areas or having lower-than-expected grades. It could also be an ideal entry route for students who have taken a break from education or are wishing to enter university with non-traditional qualifications.

Our standard entry requirements for each degree programme can be found on the relevant course pages.

How You Study

The Arts Foundation Year is taught by highly qualified academics, creative practitioners and professional support staff at the University. Students will be taught through a combination of studio-based projects, workshops, lectures, seminars, group and individual tutorials, and have access to specialist teaching facilities, equipment and purpose-built workshops.

The foundation year also provides an introduction to university student life and the opportunity to engage with an exciting range of extracurricular activities. The University of Lincoln’s campus provides a modern, student-centred environment on the picturesque Brayford Pool marina, with the city centre just a short walk away.

Modules

The Foundation programme is structured around modules that are designed to develop core creative and academic skills needed for successful University-level study. All students study the same four modules: three practical modules and one contextual studies module that intersects with the topics and subjects covered in the studio. As students progress throughout the year they can begin to work more independently and become more knowledgeable about their specialist subject to enable a smooth transition to their chosen degree programme. Students have the opportunity to engage with experimental ways of working, design processes, practical workshops, and critical thinking. The final module enables students to complete an extended project with the aim of developing their personal creative direction.

Throughout this integrated programme, students will be working with and alongside specialist staff and students and be invited to participate in activities, talks, trips and events run by the degree programmes wherever possible. Further information about the potential costs of these can be found under the fees section below.

How You are Assessed

The way students are assessed may vary between modules. Examples of assessment methods that are used include creative works, written assignments, presentations, sketchbooks, documentation of your working process and development of ideas. Group work is a feature of contemporary creative practice and is assessed through presentations, shared outcomes, and records of individual contribution towards a shared goal. The University of Lincoln aims to ensure that staff return in-course assessments to students promptly.
