Gain a better understanding of How Science Works
Develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of biology and how they relate to each other.

Is it for me?
It suits those with an interest in the study of living organisms, who enjoy carrying out investigations in the laboratory or as fieldwork. You will explore issues affecting the world today, for example developments in genetic engineering. There is a lot of practical work and coursework under controlled conditions but assessment is predominantly through examinations.

What's involved?
Cells, Exchange & Transport
Study how cells work together, the importance of stem cells and cell signalling. You will examine how gasses are exchanged at the lungs and are then transported in the blood system around the body. You will research how transport systems work in plants. Your increased knowledge of cells will help you to understand how these substances can then move into, and out of cells.
Molecules, Biodiversity, Food and Health
On completion of this unit you will understand the structure of molecules in food and there importance. You will study how the human body responds to infection, as well as other factors affecting health. You will also study biodiversity and the importance of conservation.Communication, Homeostasis and Energy
This unit examines how the cells of the body are maintained in an unchanging environment. You will look at how temperature and blood glucose are controlled and how waste substances are removed from the body. For plants you will study the important role of photosynthesis in nutrition.
Control, Genomes and Environment
You will study the important role of DNA and the causes of variation between living things. You will find out how biotechnology uses micro-organisms and enzymes to make useful products. You will research the arguments surrounding genetically modified organisms. The course is completed with flow of energy through ecosystems.

Progression
You could continue your studies on a very wide range of degree courses in Biology, Human Biology, Environmental Science, Physiotherapy, Forensic Science, Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Psychology and Pharmacy or seek employment in related areas.
