What will I study?
In the first year of the course you will study Greek and Roman Women and Homers Odyssey. In the second year you will extend your knowledge of Greek and Roman culture to include the tragedies of Sophocles and Euripides and Virgils Aeneid.
Journey with the heroes as they struggle with mythical monsters, fall in love and face the consequences, battle against enemies out to overturn their destinies. Explore the tragic fate of a woman scorned, of Oedipus born to kill his father and marry his mother. Learn about the western worlds first dramatic productions as you consider Aristophanes claim that the women of Athens are drunken, gambling, gossiping sex maniacs! Analyse the legal, sociological, and political position of women in the ancient world. Is it right for women to be second class citizens?
Although all our texts are studied in translation you will have the opportunity, if you wish, to study GCSE Latin as a separate subject. This is very useful for classicists and for those intending to pursue careers in medicine, the legal profession, and for anyone who is looking for an academic challenge!
