AS/A2 Computing
The course is designed to enable you to:
- Understand the main principles of solving problems using computers
- Understand the range of applications of computers and the effects of their use
- Understand the organisation of computer systems
- Acquire the skills to develop computer-based solutions to problems
- Understand the main principles of systems analysis & design
- Use appropriate methods of implementation, testing and documentation
This course suits those who are looking to enhance their level of understanding in computers, who like problem solving and enjoy a challenge. Assessment is mainly coursework based.
What's involved?
Computer Systems, Programming & Networking Concepts
This unit provides a basic introduction to what computers are and how they work. It provides opportunities to program in Visual Basic. Topics include Computer Systems; Programming, Information and Data Representation; Communication and Networking; Systems Development; Applications and Effects; Files and Databases; Operating Systems; Hardware Devices and the Legal and Social Implications of the Use of Computers.
Practical Systems Development
This will be a different practical project each year. It requires students to demonstrate skills in analysing, designing, implementing, testing and evaluating computer systems.

Similar to the unit on Computer Systems, Programming and Networking concepts, you will cover the ground in greater depth.
Practical Systems
This is a coursework unit which is based on a problem that students identify and investigate for themselves.
