Syllabus No: AS 3812, A2 7812

What will I study?

Economics focuses on how we can use the worlds resources in the most efficient way, and who should benefit from the use of those resources. During the AS course we study concepts such as supply and demand, trade, exchange rates, the power and influence of firms, causes of unemployment and inflation. We also study reasons why the government taxes certain products (e.g. cigarettes) more than others, and why the government gets involved in issues such as helping those on lower incomes.

In the A2 year we study the reasons why wages differ across occupations, genders and groups in society, and whether the minimum wage has helped or hindered the labour market. We also evaluate recent UK and worldwide experience of inflation and unemployment and the impact of these on living standards. Additionally, globalisation, international trade and world inequality are considered, as well as the reasons why countries are at different stages of development.

How is this course assessed?

Two modules are taken at AS level, and another two modules taken in Upper Sixth complete the full A level. All four modules are assessed by examinations, meaning that there is no coursework component. The two AS modules are: Markets in Action and The National and International Economy. The examination for each of these is 1 hour and 30 minutes in length. The two A2 modules are: The Economics of Work and Leisure and The Global Economy. The examination for each of these is 2 hours in length.

What next?

Economics opens doors to a large number of possible careers. It is viewed as an excellent grounding at either A level or graduate level for jobs in Marketing, Management, Accounting and Finance, or indeed any business-related career. It can also lead to more economics-based careers such as stockbroker, government or private sector economist, investment/systems analyst, and investment/merchant banker. As a logical and analytical subject, Economics is extremely highly regarded both by employers and universities and is a well-respected base for almost any profession.
