Why should I study Film Studies at Cardinal Newman College? We have excellent results, an innovative approach to the study of film, outstanding new facilities and teachers with a passion and enthusiasm for the subject.

You'll study a wide selection of films, have the opportunity to do practical production as well as being able to develop your own area of interest through coursework.

We also offer many enrichment opportunities, including guest speakers from the industry, Newman film club; that is both challenging and entertaining; as well excellent links with universities, including a specialist summer film school.
What is Film Studies?
Film Studies aims to develop your appreciation and understanding of cinema. Central to the subject is the study of film as an audio-visual medium. It differs from Media Studies not only because of its exclusive focus on film but also due to the emphasis placed on personal response and the appreciation of film as an art form. Films will be studied both as a means of creative expression and in their social and production contexts. A wide range of films are studied, including Hollywood, British and World Cinema films. The course also includes opportunities for creative and practical work in audio-visual or written form.
Will I enjoy Film Studies?
If you enjoy films then you should enjoy Film Studies. But enjoyment of film is not enough in itself. You must also have a desire to develop the critical and analytical skills needed to study films closely and have the curiosity to widen your taste and explore aspects of the film industry. You will be looking at familiar films but in an unfamiliar way. You will also study more challenging films.
What exactly will I do on this course?
During the first year you will:

· Complete two pieces of coursework - one a detailed analysis, one a creative project

· Explore the workings of the British and American film industries

· Study selected British and American films, taking account of aspects such as narrative, genre and social context

During the second year you will:

· Complete a research project and a creative assignment, either practical or written

· Study a topic on spectatorship

· Undertake a close study of a single film, looking at critical approaches
Progression
Film Studies, in combination with other A Levels, will help to prepare and qualify you for a wide range of university courses. Many of our students go on to Film or Media degrees, whilst others opt for a variety of other Humanities related courses. Film Studies is also useful for those considering Art & Design options.

Formal or established career structures are not always available for entry into the film industry. However, Film Studies will give you an excellent understanding of film techniques and the option of doing practical work to take with you to interviews. It will enhance your chances of progression to higher education and/or industry.
