Modern Languages provide enjoyable and useful lifelong skills. Whether used at work or for leisure purposes, they open up new avenues of communication and encourage a broader cultural understanding. Almost all teaching will be in French, and we offer a Bridging the Gap programme during the first half term.
To improve your listening and speaking skills, you will have regular access to interactive on-line resources and weekly contact with a foreign language assistant. Students also have the opportunity to take part in work experience in France.
AS Course Content
There are four topics:
Media: TV, advertising and communication technology
Popular Culture: cinema, music and fashion / trends
Healthy Living / Lifestyle: sport / exercise, health and well-being and holidays
Family / Relationships: relationships within the family, friendships and marriage / partners
Assessment:
Unit 1: listening, reading and writing- 2 hour written paper (70%)
Unit 2: speaking - 35-minute speaking test, including 30 minutes' preparation time (30%)
A2 Course Content
There are four further topics:
Environment: pollution, energy and protecting the planet
The multicultural society: immigration, integration and racism
Contemporary social issues: wealth and poverty, law and order and the impact of scientific and technological progress
Two cultural topics: the study of an author and a director from a French-speaking country
Assessment:
Unit 3: listening, reading and writing - 2½ hour written paper (70%)
Unit 4: 35-minute speaking test including 20 minute preparation time (30%)
Is French for you?
You will enjoy and benefit from French if you have shown an aptitude for languages at GCSE or in previous studies; are interested in how languages work; are confident about expressing your viewsd, both orally and on paper; and are interested in current affairs and future issues, both within Europe and the wider world.
Visits and visitors
There are opportunities for excellent work experience abroad. In addition, we provide Gap Year advice about working abroad. There are also theatre and cinema visits.
Entry requirements
Minimum five Grades Cs at GCSE in appropriate subjects including Maths or English. You will need to achieve at least a Grade B in French at GCSE.
