What is Government & Politics?
For many students Government & Politics will be a new subject, but the subject matter is seen every day on television. Politics affects us all! The subject is an in depth analysis of current affairs and gives an understanding not only of the news but of how Britain is run.
What topics will I study?
In the first year the topics covered will include:
· Participation & voting behavior
· Electoral systems
· Political parties
· Pressure groups & protest movements
· The British constitution
· Parliament
· The core executive
· Multi-level governance
In their second year students progressing on to the A Level course will study the following topics on American Politics:
· Constitutional framework
· The legislative branch
· The executive
· The judicial branch
· US electoral process & direct democracy
· Political parties
· Voting behavior
· Pressure groups
Will I get the chance to go on any visits?
Yes, you will be given the opportunity to participate in a number of visits related to the study of politics. These may include visits to Parliament at Westminster, the European Parliament in Brussels, the UN in New York and the White House in Washington.
Progression
The course will provide students with the analytical skills and knowledge of current affairs which will provide an excellent basis for application to a wide range of social science and arts courses in higher education, as well as careers in areas such as management, law, the media, marketing and advertising.
