Why study History?

Many of you may not have studied History since year 9, so you may be wondering, why should I return to a subject Ive given up?

The answer to this question is that AS/A2 Level History offers you more than just content. The study of History covers a great variety of skills including analysis, comprehension, research, presentation and organisational skills, which are valued by both universities and employers. Furthermore, whatever career you embark upon, your study of History will have enhanced your understanding of a variety of aspects of life such as politics, religion and culture. You will develop an awareness of change and continuity over time and this will help you to understand developments in the world today. We hope to give you the opportunity to attend lectures given by respected academics.

What will I study and how will it be assessed?
AS Level History (AQA)
Unit 1
(50% of AS marks. 25% of total A Level marks)
Alternative B Britain 1483-1529
Two questions to be answered from a choice of three. Questions will be in two parts. This paper tests understanding of change over time.

Unit 2
(50% of AS marks. 25% of total A Level marks)
Alternative Q The USA and Vietnam 1961-1975
One compulsory two-part source question, plus one structured two-part question, from a choice of two. This paper tests understanding of a significant period of history in depth.

A2 Level
Unit 3
(30% of total A Level marks)
Alternative K Triumph and Collapse Russia and the USSR 1941-1991
Two essay questions to be answered from a choice of three. This paper tests understanding both in depth and breadth.

Unit 4
(20% of total A Level marks)
Historical Enquiry Students will be required to submit a personal study of approximately 3,500 words, based on the investigation of a historical issue, which will be chosen by the department. An introductory course will be delivered promoting awareness of important themes and debates, surrounding the development of a historical issue over 100 years. The students will then choose a topic to investigate from a list of suggested questions. This will be internally assessed by the centre and moderated by AQA.

Does History link particularly well with other subjects?
History can be studied with subjects from Humanities, Social Science, or Science disciplines.

Where might it lead me?
Former students have told us that studying History has provided excellent preparation for degrees in a wide variety of subjects, including: History, Law, Business, English and Politics. A wide range of job opportunities is also open to you, including: journalism, broadcasting, law, local and central government, teaching, public relations and business management.

Entry Requirement
