There are two units at AS, both with a focus on British government and politics.
The first unit discusses how democracy works, who has most influence, how to explain how different groups vote in elections, and how ordinary citizens can participate in a democracy.
The second unit focuses on the power of different parts of government, the process through which laws are made, and the balance between individual rights and the power of government.
In A2 you will learn about American politics, and the lively and sometimes extraordinary world of US politics and government. Government and Politics at AS and A2 will help you to interpret information, develop your critical thinking skills, and will enable you to evaluate and comment on the current political system. The course is delivered in classrooms on Floor 5 of the B Block, at the Park Lane Campus. Government and Politics complements any other option choices, but would be especially beneficial for those studying History, Law, or Sociology.
Government and Politics is highly regarded by universities, who appreciate the critical thinking skills you will develop.
The skills and knowledge you learn in politics are suited for a range of careers, such as journalism and the media, the legal professions, teaching, management, the public sector and social work. Or alternatively, you could be the next prime minister! If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
