The exam board is AQA. The AS and A2 Sociology course involves the study of society and its effect on the individual.
Students will study how individuals are influenced by background factors such as class, gender and ethnicity, belonging to these social groups determines what kind of career you do, where you live, even how long you may live.
Also understanding a variety of theoretical perspectives is essential in sociology, understanding and applying these perspectives is the key to success throughout all units covered in the course.

Course programme

Sociology is not about helping people or necessarily about improving society. Nor should it be confused with psychology which is the study of the individual. Sociology is about groups of people. You learn to apply sociological thinking to an analysis of these groups in contemporary society and to your own experiences. SCLY1: Families & Households SCLY2: Education & Research Methods SCLY 3: Mass Media Ownership & Control Representations of class/age/gender etc. News production/selection SCLY4: Crime and Deviance and Theory and Methods - the role of formal and informal social control agencies, explanations for patterns of crime by class, ethnicity, gender, age and locality State crime Cyber-crime Theories on crime Communication skills Presentation skills Analytical & Evaluative skills. The A Level Centre is located in our award winning £9m extension which added 60 more classrooms to Park Lane Campus. There will be an expectation that all students undertake 4 AS in year 1 and 3 A2 in year 2. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
