AS/A2 Media Studies
The course is designed to enable you to:
Examine several aspects of the Media through practical and analytical work
Consider key concepts in Media Studies such as language, genre, target audience, institutions and representations
Explore production processes, technologies and contexts.
Is it for me?
The course suits those who can demonstrate a keen interest in the media including TV, newspapers, magazines, films, internet and new technologies. You should enjoy practical work and using technical equipment as well as analysing how the media work and their influences on audiences. Assessment is both coursework and exam based.
What's involved?
Foundation Portfolio in Media
This module assesses the ability to plan and construct media products using technical and creative skills. You will carry out and present appropriate research and will produce two practical pieces of work using contemporary media technologies.
Key Media Concepts (TV Drama)
This unit will assess your textual analysis skills and your understanding of the concept of representation. You will examine media institutions and their production processes, distribution strategies and related issues.
Advanced Portfolio in Media
This unit assesses your ability to plan and construct media products. You will produce a portfolio in a combination of two or more media.
Critical Perspectives in Media
Examine media concepts, contexts and critical debates. Debates include global media, 'we media' and post modern media. You will debate a contemporary media issue and evaluate your own practical work in reflective and theoretical ways.
Progression
Students who have previously studied Media have gone on to degrees such as Multimedia, Media and Culture, Marketing and Media, Media and English.
