What will I study?
You will examine a wide range of media texts taken from broadcast, print and E-media, using appropriate analytical tools and language in order to understand how media texts are constructed. You will explore how social/cultural groups, events and issues are represented in media texts and how audiences respond to and interpret those texts. This course explores the world constructed by media texts from the representations of men in mens magazines, the police in action movies to women in music and ethnic minorities in the news. It engages in debates about how audiences respond to media texts and how the media industries respond to audience expectation and demand.
The course also explores the practical application of theory through a significant course work component which offers the opportunity to acquire expertise in a range of media technologies e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Elements and Dreamweaver. Previous students have produced music videos, print marketing packages, web-sites and film trailers.
How is this course assessed?
At AS, practical coursework production counts for 50% of the total mark. Coursework is assessed internally and moderated externally. One exam composed of three questions makes up the final 50%. At A2 a practical production piece arising from a critical investigation counts for 50% of the total. In addition there is an external exam testing knowledge and understanding of text industry and audience and overall synoptic skills.
