Why should I choose this course?
  • Chemistry develops valuable and marketable skills, including logical thought, analysis, numeracy and communication
  • I enjoy practical work and carrying out experiments
  • I hope to apply for a science-based or otherwise competitive degree course at University
  • Science A-levels are highly regarded by employers

What does the course consist of?
  • Chemistry is about the study of substances, what they are made of, how they interact and the role they play in living things. You are surrounded by aspects of chemistry on a daily basis - in the air you breathe, the food you eat and the clothes you wear
  • The AS course is made up of three units, two of which are theory-based and the third is practical. The same structure is found in the A2 course. You will cover a wide variety of material at AS, where the fundamental principles of Chemistry will be explained. Topics will include Atomic Structure and Bonding, Kinetics, Energetics, Equilibria, Group 2 and Group 7, and Organic Chemistry.
  • Practical work is linked closely to the theory, with the aim of developing understanding through â€-hands-on†experience
How is this course assessed?
  • Your knowledge and understanding of the theory is assessed via two written exams in each year
  • Practical skills are also assessed and contribute to the final grade in both AS and A2

  • A good grade in Chemistry will also improve your prospects of gaining a place on many other highly competitive higher education courses such as Law, Accountancy, Engineering, Psychology and Physiotherapy
  • A wide range of careers in industry
