A Level Citizenship

Why choose Citizenship?
This is an ideal course if you are interested in topical controversial issues, and enjoy participating in debates. It is particularly appropriate if you are studying Law, Politics, Sociology, Media Studies and Health and Social Care. The main focus is on the relationship between today's citizens and society. You will study a wide range of interesting topics including the English court system, the modern welfare state, poverty, social exclusion, health and inequalities, and the functions of the voluntary sector


Resources and Facilities
Students will be taught by very well-qualified and experienced teachers. All the staff have had recent experience of vocational work. There is a wide range of relevant books and periodicals available.


Teaching and Learning Styles
A wide variety of creative teaching styles such as role-play and group work will be used. There is excellent liaison with the local community. Local speakers include lawyers, social workers, politicians and GPs. Outside visits are made to the local magistrates and Crown Court, a prison and the Houses of Parliament.


Assessment
Four modules will be taken:

Unit 1 Identity, Rights and Responsibilities - worth 20% of the A level marks
Unit 2 Democracy, Active Citizenship and Participation - worth 30% of total A level marks
Unit 3 Power and Justice - worth 25% of the total A level marks
Unit 4 Global Issues and Making a Difference - worth 25% of the total A level marks.


Progression Opportunities
Many students will go on to study a degree course related to law, health, social care, politics, management studies or business.
