The qualifications in Health and Social Care are related to health, law, teaching/managerial roles in the NHS and environmental health. They offer students a choice of routes into Higher Education and employment.
Resources and Facilities
The department is staffed by well-qualified and experienced teachers. The classrooms are up-to-date and have recently been refurbished. There is a very enthusiastic and caring atmosphere in the department and personal tutorials are regularly available to all students. There is an excellent range of relevant and up-to-date resources including persona, anatomical and virtually reality dolls that are used for teaching multiculturalism.
Teaching and Learning Styles
A wide variety of creative teaching styles such as role-play and debates will be used. The teachers are specialists in the areas of Nursing/Midwifery, Human Biology, Food and Nutrition, Child Care, Ethics, Social Policy, Psychology and Sociology.
There is excellent liaison with the local community. Recent guest speakers have including health visitors, Age Concern, Teenage pregnancy co-ordinator and a Chlamydia screening programme co-ordinator. A visit to a homeless shelter (hostel) is also part of the course.
Work Experience
Students will be given the opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of settings, including primary schools, social care and legal settings, hospitals and Childrens Centres.
Assessment
Assessment is a combination of external tests and coursework.
Progression Opportunities
The AS/A2 Health and Social Care course combines very well with all AS and A2 subjects but particularly with Sociology, Law, Psychology and Biology. It supports applications for a degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Teacher Training, Social Work or Occupational Therapy. Students gain effective communication skills when taking part in discussions, debates and giving presentations.
IMPORTANT - This course can be studied to achieve the Single AS/A2 (one AS or one A level) and/or the Double AS/A2 Award (two ASs or A levels). Please note you can also do one A level or one and a half A levels in a year in Health & Social Care.
