Which course do I choose?
AS or A2 Computing (page 39) provides a very good grounding for students wanting to study Computer Science at University. It combines well with subjects such as Physics, Maths and Technology.
AS or A2 ICT (this page) is a useful course for anybody who will be using computers at any time. It combines well with any other subject.
Resources and Facilities
Four teaching rooms equipped with the necessary industry standard software
Visual Basic
Laser printer in each room and scanner and digital and video cameras available in the department
Hardware and software updated frequently
Internet access available in all rooms
Teaching and Learning Styles
Practical activities, learning how to use the advanced features of Word, Excel and Access and producing assessed project work
Understanding the important concepts relating to the use of computers at work - the theory behind relational databases, the Data Protection Act etc
Assessment
The format of lessons will vary. This is a very practical course and you will gain hands on experience of creating webpages, as well as becoming proficient in the use of spreadsheets and databases.
Sometimes you will be expected to work in a small group researching or discussing a topic. At other times, your teacher will introduce a topic and you will carry out independent research. You may even find you are expected to give a presentation yourself!
Progression Opportunities
Most of our students go on to study either ICT or a related subject at university, or get a job where the experience gained will be useful. Many students have acquired jobs on the strength of their ICT skills.
