AS/A Level Mathematics / Further Mathematics / Statistics
Mathematics is not only a beautiful and exciting subject in its own right but it also underpins many other branches of learning. It has been fundamental to the development of the society in which we live.
Mathematics can be divided into two areas: at its heart lies Pure Mathematics, which in the main is concerned with Algebra and Geometry, and Applied Mathematics, which, as the name implies, applies techniques in Pure Mathematics to solve problems in the world about us.
Our courses allow for the possibility of studying three main areas of Applied Mathematics:
-
Mechanics:
which tries to understand the way in which things move by studying the forces that act upon them. How else could we have sent a man to the moon? -
Statistics:
which tries to draw sensible conclusions from data collected in this uncertain world of ours. How else could politicians predict the outcome of a referendum on Europe (if we ever get one)? -
Decision Mathematics:
which attempts to solve organisational problems, for example to find the cheapest way to get from Hereford Sixth Form College to Paris, France.

AS/A level Mathematics
(normally a two year course but possible to do fast-track in one year) You will take four modules of Pure Mathematics and two modules of Applied Mathematics. This course gives a thorough grounding in Mathematics. -
AS/A level Further Mathematics
You will take AS/A level Mathematics 'fast-track' in the first year and in the second year either a further three modules leading to AS Further Mathematics or a further six modules leading to A level Further Mathematics. Students report that Further Mathematics is an excellent, though not essential, preparation for a degree in Mathematics, Engineering or any of the Mathematical Sciences. -
AS/A level Statistics
Students take three Statistics modules in the first year and another three in the second year. There are no Pure Mathematics modules associated with this course.
Mathematicians are highly valued and well placed when it comes to finding employment or a place in higher education on a wide range of courses. Openings exist in industry, banking and finance, as accountants and actuaries, as well as in managerial positions where an intelligent and numerate person, who has been trained to think clearly, is required. People who study Mathematics up to and beyond A level go into a wide variety of different careers.
