Why should I choose this course?
  • I want to develop and improve my language skills in French, German or Spanish
  • I want to have an edge over non-linguists in today†s jobs market
What does the course consist of?
  • You will be taught in a structured way - listening and speaking in our digitised language laboratory; talking in small groups with our language assistants; watching films and clips from foreign television
  • In each of the languages, two units are studied in Year 1 for the AS-level
    · Unit 1 - Oral - Speaking on a topic and general conversation
    · Unit 2 - Listening, Reading and Writing
    · Leisure and Lifestyle including travel, sport, hobbies, entertainment, healthy and unhealthy living
    · The Individual and Society including relationships, youth culture, education and future careers
  • A further two units are studied for each language in Year 2 for the full A-level
    · Unit 3 - Oral - Discussion and Oral presentation
    · Unit 4 - Listening, Reading and Writing
    · Environmental issues including transport, energy and conservation
    · Social and Political issues including terrorism, the role of the media, immigration, the world of work
  • College to college exchanges to:
    · Aix-en-Provence in the South of France
    · Troisdorf, near Cologne and Bonn
    · Rivas, in Madrid.

How is this course assessed?
  • Both AS and A-level are assessed through written exams and oral in the summer
What might this course lead on to?
  • The study of languages at university, perhaps combined with other subjects such as Law, Business, Management or Marketing, or with a new language such as Italian or Japanese
  • In the globalised market place there are more and more opportunities for linguists in business, in accounting and in international law.
