AS/A LEVEL PERFORMING ARTS (ACTING PATHWAY)

WHAT IS PERFORMING ARTS?
Performing Arts is an exciting course, which focuses largely on you as a performer and the Performing Arts industry. You will develop your personal skills in performance, working towards a final performance in the summer term. You will have a personal skills development profile which you are expected to develop and maintain improvement in, which will eventually culminate in a showcase of work art the end of the course. You will also look in-depth at the Performing Arts Industry, from the many types of performing venues there are to the different job roles available in the performing arts and getting work.

USEFUL SKILLS & INTERESTS
  • A natural level of ability in acting, design or technical theatre where we can develop your existing skills in these areas
  • The ability to keep ongoing, accurate and evaluative records of practical work
  • The confidence to read aloud in front of large groups
  • The confidence to participate in group practical work
COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT
The AS course is separated into 3 units

Skills Development
You will work intensively to develop one area of skills associated with performing. You will need to keep an accurate record of the development of your chosen skills in preparation for Unit 3. You will work on improving these nominated skills associated with your area; this will count towards the assessment of the unit.

Investigating Performing Arts Organisations
You will choose and research 2 different types of performance venues. You will create a portfolio of work which investigates how the venue operates (funding, marketing, programming, etc), you will also study 1 role from both venues, i.e. stage manager, box office manager, lighting technician, etc. This unit may involve some work experience at a local arts centre, theatre or concert hall.

Professional Practice: Performance
This unit builds on the skills developed in the Skills Development unit. The chosen area of study which you chose in the previous unit will determine the area you go on to study in this unit, i.e. if you focused on Drama and Acting you will do performance, however if you are focusing on the technical skills you will do production.

As a whole class you will be responsible for the production and performance of a full length event in front of a large audience. You, yourself will be responsible for one area of the following performance, costume, lighting, set, stage management or sound. You will be assessed by an external examiner on the production.

As well as working in the classroom youll also get to enjoy, trips to the theatre, workshops with visiting professionals and the use of a
highly equipped professional theatre studio

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The AS Performing Arts method of assessment is by three portfolios of work with practical projects, including a major production, two of which are internally examined and externally moderated and one externally assessed by a visiting examiner. The A2 is the same structure as the AS, with two medium productions and one major production.

COURSE COMMITMENT
You are expected to wear appropriate clothing dark colours, which allow freedom of movement, sensible footwear and no jewellery (for health and safety reasons). You will also be expected to be involved in the course way beyond your timetabled lessons, so you must be prepared to work beyond the normal college hours.
