Why choose Religious Studies?
Religious Studies provides the opportunity to consider life's most important questions. What is the point of human life? How should we live? What happens after death? You will be able to study what different thinkers have said on these questions, particularly in Islam and Christianity. You will be able to engage in lively discussion and form your own judgements. The course also helps you to think critically: a crucial life-skill also important in employment. Religious Studies is open both to those with any kind of religious belief and to those with none.
Course Content
The course allows you to concentrate on the development of Christianity from Greek philosophy and the history of Islam. You will explore isssues such as the role of women in Islam as well as arguments for the existence of God.
Teaching and Learning Styles
There is a good deal of discussion together with teacher and student presentations, videos, and research, use of IT and the Internet, essay writing, field trips and exam practice.
Assessment
A/A2 Religious Studies is assessed by two modular exams at the end of Year 1 and Year 2.
Progression Opportunities
You can go on to do degree courses in Religious Studies, Theology, Philosophy, or Oriental Studies which make direct use of the subject content. However, Religious Studies AS and A level are also a good background for a vast range of other degree courses and jobs. The thinking skills it encourages are easily transferable to other subjects.
