The astronomer is the one who studies the phenomena that occur in space, within the Solar System and beyond. He looks and scrutinizes the sky trying to fix and systematize the processes and rules that underlie astral and sidereal phenomena. Moreover, this professional figure is dedicated to the study of the motion, conformation and characteristics of planets, stars, black holes, comets, asteroids, galaxies and everything that belongs to the universe. In the twentieth century, the continuous improvement of optical telescopes was accompanied by the development of other instruments, such as spectroscopy and the radio telescope, which opened the door of observation to wavelengths other than the visible, while the birth of astronautics has allowed astronomers to study the bodies of the Solar System in detail (space probes) and to observe the Universe with the accuracy that allows the absence of the atmosphere (Hubble Space Telescope). Historically, astronomy was more concerned with the classification and description of phenomena in the sky, while astrophysics attempted to explain these phenomena and the differences between them using physical laws. Today this distinction has mostly disappeared and the terms "astronomer" and "astrophysicist" are interchangeable. Professional astronomers are highly educated individuals who typically have a PhD in physics or astronomy and are employed by research institutes or universities.
