Course Structure

The Level 2 in Award in Substance Misuse is divided into following comprehensive modules. Unit 01 – Understand substance use/misuse This unit examines the size and scope of drug use/misuse in the UK. Over the duration of the course, students will gain an awareness of the reasons people use drugs and be able to categorise them, explaining their effects. The importance of attitudes and values, and their effects on behaviour, is also considered. Unit 02 – Understand how to recognise and respond to substance use/misuse Students will consider the issues involved in recognising and responding to drug use/misuse in this unit, including how to spot the signs and symptoms of drug use/misuse and the range of possible responses and services available. You will also gain a basic understanding of the laws and legal framework related to drug use/misuse. Unit 03 – Understand the safe, sensible and social use of alcohol Widely misunderstood, the use and misuse of alcohol is analysed in this unit. You will gain an understanding of the issues and concerns around the use and misuse of alcohol, including the different styles of drinking and their potential effects. The impact of alcohol use among young people is also discussed, and you will gain an understanding of society's responses to alcohol misuse. Unit 08 – Understand blood-borne infections related to substance use/misuse A grounding in the extent and effects of blood-borne infections related to substance use is the key to this unit. Students will gain an understanding of the link between substance use and infection, and how that link can be broken or prevented. The qualification has a credit value 9 on the Qualification Credit Framework, and can be completed in 12 weeks.
