Overview
The Awareness of Autism workshop is designed for practitioners new to the field of autism. Participants will be introduced to basic concepts and theories relating to Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Course Objectives
Participants will be helped to make the link between theoretical knowledge and practice. The Awareness of Autism course will place emphasis on reflective practice and examination of the participant´s skills, attitudes and communication style. It will make use of presentations, group discussions, a workbook and a video.
The course will involve the following topics:
- What is autism?
- Triad of impairment
- Descriptions and recognition of autism characteristics
- Autism as a spectrum disorder
- Recognition of sensory difficulties
- Introduction to Support Strategies

- Introduction to the Sensory Issues of the Person with Autism
- Introduction Social Scripts for People with Autism
- Behaviour Issues: Training Staff about Managing Autism
- Using Visual Strategies to Support the Individual with Autism

Additional Information
The course is supported by a workbook and accompanying discussions. On Completion the participant will recieve a certificate of attendance.
