This programme is available to students who have successfully completed the HND in Business Management and are seeking careers in general business management. This brings together the taught element of the course with the development of skills needed for modern business. The course is divided into two main areas: Strategic Management and Contemporary Issues in Organisations. Strategic Management is concerned with the relationship between the organisation and its external environment, and will develop your understanding and capabilities in the fundamental aspects of responsible strategic management.

    • Core Units Contemporary Issues in Organisations

      This unit examines the economic, socio-cultural and technological nature of the globalised world, and allows you to develop an understanding of how knowledge of current issues can be managed and utilised through effective organisational policies and practices. In addition, this unit explores the critical skills required by employees to meet the demands of the 21st century organisation. Emphasis will be on the complexities of organisational life, the managerial process within a global context, and how the two interact to create organisational cultures and structures considered appropriate for survival in the knowledge economy.

      Strategic Management

      This unit is concerned with the relationship between the organisation and its external environment, and will help to develop your understanding and capabilities in the fundamental aspects of responsible strategic management. You will look at a range of topics within strategic management including organisational purpose, strategic alternatives, and strategy development. This unit offers an analytical approach to understanding environmental factors, competitive influences and strategic capability, whilst also developing your knowledge of the formulation of corporate, business and international strategic alternatives.

    • Option Units Business and Enterprise Negotiated Unit

      This unit allows you to draw on your own work situation and develop a business project related to your place of work, or for you to explore a business scenario. As a result of undertaking this unit, you will have a deeper understanding and knowledge of your chosen business area and topic, and be able to demonstrate your ability to critically analyse the business scenario.

      Business Finance Theory and Practice

      In this unit you will study the theory behind business finance and develop and gain an in-depth understanding of financial markets, instruments, institutions, theories and decisions. Your studies will include economists' theories of finance, aspects of capital, shares, the Alternative Investment Market, data collection and analysis, and the political economy of finance. You will also look at the problems of the financial services industry, and accounting and auditing in financial markets.

      Global Services Marketing

      This unit addresses the development and application of marketing strategies in the context of public and private leisure organisations. It recognises the increasing impact of the leisure (and other service) industries and the significance of marketing in the context of global business.

      Human Resource Management and Development

      The purpose of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of people management and resourcing. This unit explores the nature of people management and resourcing and examines issues such as: how employees are utilised in the right place at the right time for the right remuneration; how employees are developed to maximise their potential, resilience and employability; and how employees are retained within the organisation to help it to adapt to change and achieve its goals, objectives and strategies.

      Legal Rights, Duties and Freedoms

      This unit is an examination into the background and nature of legal rights, duties and freedoms within the United Kingdom, Europe and globally, together with consideration of relevant matters of a contemporary nature. You will look at the theories of legal rights, duties and freedoms alongside their historical and political background, including the implementation of the European Convention of Human Rights in the United Kingdom, human rights under the UN, the use of force, and humanitarian intervention. You will also critically examine the issues of a contemporary nature in relation to legal rights, duties and freedoms, and their relevance to business.

      N.B. This unit is not designed to grant exemption from the Law Society or other professional body requirements.

      Management Accounting

      Management accountants are increasingly becoming integral members of planning and decision-making teams instead of just bookkeepers and data providers. This unit aims to provide you with the sufficient familiarity with cost systems that both managers and accountants need in order to perform their job roles. You will develop an understanding of profitability assessment, product inefficiencies detection, and incentives as result of undertaking Management Accounting.

      Marketing Communications Strategy

      This unit examines the key concepts and models relating to marketing communications strategy and marketing communications planning. Your studies will cover a range of topics related to marketing communications, such as Shared meaning and multiple audiences, Legal and regulatory issues, Branding, Social networking and e-media, Advertising, PR and sponsorship, International considerations, Ethical and social responsibility.
