Course Content Year 1 Core Units

Business World

This unit will help you to understand how internal and external influences affect operational efficiency in business and what impact the business environment can have on the market. Topics covered include: Cleaner Design and Corporate Social Responsibility, Total Quality Management, P.E.S.T. Analysis, and the Health and Safety at Work Act and the needs of the operation in complying with it.

Finance for Business

This unit aims to provide the aspiring Manager or Entrepreneur with a wide range of useful financial concepts, theories, models and techniques for both Capitalist and Cooperative Enterprise. You will study how such financial techniques provide businesses with the budgetary planning and control systems necessary for the publication of financial statements.

Marketing Principles and Planning

This unit examines the key principles, concepts and models relating to marketing decisions and marketing planning. The strategic marketing planning process including analysis of marketing environment and the principles of segmentation, targeting and positioning are investigated, as are the elements of the marketing mix; the 7P's including the principles of product decisions and branding, pricing and promotional decisions, distribution and the services mix. Examples of the application of marketing concepts to contexts such as retail, leisure, sport, events and financial services will be analysed and discussed. Social responsibility and ethical decision making in marketing will also be discussed.

People Management in Organisations

The purpose of the unit is to support students in their acquisition of relevant knowledge/skills pertinent to studying people management within an organisational context. The unit will cover the concept of management, planning and organising, controlling and influencing plus the challenges managing in the global arena.

Year 2 Core Units

Entrepeneural Leadership

The Unit will cover two main aspects of Entrepreneurial Leadership Development 1) the transition of Entrepreneur to successful Business Owner/Manager: An understanding of leadership, with emphasis on distributed leadership and ethical leadership. The value of Empowerment and the ability to create innovation through collaboration and organisation. Intraprenurship, Strategic thinking, and Social, Environmental, and Economic Opportunity Development, will also be considered. 2) The enhancement of Entrepreneurial Leadership Capabilities: This will consist of Self-Awareness; Ethical Decision Making, Effective Communication Skills, Building Trust, Emotional Intelligence, Social Identity, and Proactive Self-Development.

Responsible and Ethical Organisations

This unit provides an insight into corporate ethical values and social responsibilities within an international business context. Content includes - Perspectives on business ethics and values; Ethical values in business; Ethical theories; Responses to ethical situations; Organisational accountability; Compliance and integrity; Corporate social responsibility; Sustainability; Global and local values; Globalisation and international business; Ethical proposals for business.

Option Units

Business Negotiated Unit

This unit allows you to draw on your own work situation and develop a business project related to your place of work, or for you to explore a business scenario. As a result of undertaking this unit, you will have a deeper understanding and knowledge of your chosen business area and topic.

Enterprise Creation and Planning

This unit looks at the skills required to formulate and grow a business idea ready for the completion of a working business plan. As a result of undertaking this unit, you will have a deeper understanding and knowledge of your chosen business area and topic at a practical level.

Financial Accounting

Financial Accounting is designed to build on your Year 1 Finance unit and will provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of the production of final accounts from the full range of businesses including sole traders, partnerships and limited companies, whilst giving you a comprehensive knowledge of adjustments.

Global Marketing

In this unit you will explore the International Marketing Environment and look at the impact of Globalisation in Business. You will examine the variety of Market Entry Modes available to the International Marketing manager, and formulate appropriate international marketing strategies within the strategic marketing plan.

Lanquages

You can add a foreign language to your portfolio of skills. Enhance your employability by learning Arabic, Chinese, English (as a foreign language), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish or Urdu alongside your main degree. Whatever your language knowledge, from beginner to advanced, these classes will take you to the next level of proficiency.

Logistics and Supply Chain Systems

This unit aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the elements and processes of logistics and supply chain systems. It will be introductory in nature giving students grounding in management information systems and in particular logistics systems. Indicative topics include: - History and development of management information and logistics systems - Supply chain planning - Transportation: road, rail, sea and air - Distribution - Warehousing - Inventory management.

Year 3 Core Units

Contemporary Issues in Organisations

This unit is intended to reflect a range of contemporary and pervasive issues in business and management and involves the study of four key themes, the subject content will change according to contemporary economic and social circumstances.

Human Resource Management and Development

The purpose of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of people management and resourcing. This unit explores the nature of people management and resourcing and examines issues such as: how employees are utilised in the right place at the right time for the right remuneration; how employees are developed to maximise their potential, resilience and employability; and how employees are retained within the organisation to help it to adapt to change and achieve its goals, objectives and strategies.

Managerial Law

This unit aims to increase your knowledge of the role and significance of law for managers, and will help develop your ability to adopt legally sound solutions and procedures. You will look at the legal framework under which businesses function, which will include such topics as: consumer protection, employee rights, legal features of differing business organisations, and the protection of minority interests.

Strategic Management

This unit is concerned with the relationship between the organisation and its external environment, and will help to develop your understanding and capabilities in the fundamental aspects of responsible strategic management. You will look at a range of topics within strategic management including organisational purpose, strategic alternatives, and strategy development. This unit offers an analytical approach to understanding environmental factors, competitive influences and strategic capability, whilst also developing your knowledge of the formulation of corporate, business and international strategic alternatives.
