Course Content

In BA Drama and German, each subject figures equally, with students studying the same number of modules from each subject. First year students take performance-orientated practical modules, plus lectures and seminars on critical approaches to theatre and contemporary and historical contexts of performance. Students take three German modules, including two core language modules and a core culture module. Culture modules include The Making of Modern Germany, Representing Germany: Gender, Nation and Identity, and The Wende in Text and Film.

Second year students choose options ranging from acting classes to lighting design, and Greek Tragedy to Modern British Theatre Companies.

The third year of the course is spent in Germany. The year overseas will probably be one of the most exciting and challenging experiences you will ever have. You will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken language, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into the life of your chosen country. The 'year', incidentally, is an 'academic year' and means at least eight months spent abroad. Students can choose to study at an exchange partner university, work in a school as a language assistant or work in industry or commerce.

In your final year you develop skills in independent study, you take three options covering a range of aspects of theatre from different cultures and periods of theatre history to practical specialisms.

All of this is complemented by a lecture course that examines acting, directing and scenography.
