From Hull to Hollywood, on this degree you can study and even meet the literary greats. For instance, we have hosted talks from writers such as Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk and Man Booker prize-winner Julian Barnes. You will examine English and American traditions in an artistic and cultural context, gaining a sophisticated awareness of the major periods and modes of literary expression and the critical debates between the two literary forms.

Course programme

Course Content

Our research-active staff use a variety of teaching methods, teaching in both lectures and in small seminar groups to provide interactive learning opportunities and active student engagement. English modules feature equally with American Literature choices.

In your first year you will be given an introduction to literary studies, including modules on renaissance literature, English poetry and American Literature from the Early Colonial Period to the Present Day. You can choose two further modules which may be chosen from Creative Writing Skills, an Introduction to Language and Communication, an Introduction to Modernist Fiction and a free elective from a different discipline.

In your second and third years you will take a varied range of modules to cover the full spectrum of literary history. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a research-based dissertation on a related topic of your choice in your final year. You are assessed in a variety of ways: exams, assessed essays, presentations, reports and dissertations.
