Course programme

Course Content

In BA French and Religion, each subject figures equally. As a student of French, you study both language and culture modules. Three core French modules are taken in the first year: two language modules and a culture module. The language module comprises three classes per week (with an additional class for Beginners and Improvers). In the Religion element of the first-year programme, students study key modules in Introduction to World Religions, Christian Tradition and Faith in Media.

In the second year, you take a culture module that provides an overview of the role of written and visual cultures and language in society. In the final year the culture module concentrates on France at War. The second and final years in Religion offers a range of optional modules that develop skills in theological and moral reasoning, as well as modules that provide students with methodologies for exploring cultural expressions of religion. In the final year there is the opportunity to complete a dissertation in Religion or Modern Languages.

The third year provides the opportunity to study abroad. The Year Abroad will probably be one of the most exciting and challenging experiences you will ever have. You will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken language, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into French life. The 'year', incidentally, is an 'academic year' and means at least eight months spent abroad. In fact, the period of time can vary from the whole (academic) year at one extreme, to just 3 or 4 weeks.

You can expand your qualification by gaining the Trinity CertTESOL (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) whilst studying for your degree. You may also sit exams with the French Chamber of Commerce.
