Course programme
In the first year, Joint Honours students usually take three modules in German (including core language and culture) and three Film Studies modules (including Reading the Screen and Screen Nations). These include: An Introduction to Film Analysis and Theory, Parts 1 & 2; and Film History. German culture modules include The Making of Modern Germany; Representing Germany: Gender, Nation and Identity; and The 'Wende' in Text and Film.
Beyond the first year, students have a free choice of film modules including East Asian Cinema; Analysing Television Drama; Hitchcock: Anatomy of an Auteur; Disney Studies; Spy Cinema; and a screen production project. (Please note that although we do not currently offer a German Cinema module, German film does feature on some of our other modules, and we have a German-speaking Film Studies staff member who would be able and willing to supervise individual projects.) A full module catalogue is available on the departmental websites.
The third year of the degree is spent in a German-speaking country. Through studying abroad, you will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken language, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into the life of your chosen country. The 'year' refers to an 'academic year' and means at least eight months spent abroad. Students can choose to study at an exchange partner university, work in a school as a language assistant, or work in industry or commerce.
All our language degrees offer the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit free elective module throughout your studies. The Department of Modern Languages offers the largest Free Elective Programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish), ranging from absolute beginners to post A-level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
