Course programme
Students take two modules in German language, one per semester, plus one year-long German culture module. In the first year, language modules are available at either Beginners and Improvers or Advanced level. In the second and fourth year, all students take the same language modules. German culture modules include The Making of Modern Germany, Representing Germany: Gender, Nation and Identity, and The 'Wende' in Text and Film. You must also take two modules in Management, one per semester, and a year-long free elective or another year-long module offered by the department.
The first year introduces you to the study of management and organisational behaviour. You will also study a range of academic and professional skills and, as you progress, consider the management of diversity and corporate social responsibility. In your final year you will learn about high-performing organisations and strategic leadership, especially in international organisations.
The third year of the degree is spent in Germany. Through studying abroad, you will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken German, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into the life of your chosen country. The 'year' refers to an 'academic year' and means at least eight months spent abroad. Students can choose to study at a partner university, work in a school as a language assistant, or work in industry or commerce.
All the language degrees offer the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit free elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offers the largest Free Elective Programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post A-level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
