Fusing two popular and well-resourced disciplines, this joint degree allows you to discover the fascinating histories of people, themes, places and eras, while you examine the social and cultural effects of cinema representation and film production. The History element of the course, which enjoys a leading reputation for teaching and research - in the 2014 National Student Survey, 95% of respondents said that our 'staff are good at explaining things' - covers all phases of the historical process, from pre-history to medieval and early modern times to the very recent past. Your Film Studies modules consider the development of cinema as an international phenomenon.

Course programme
In the first year there is a choice of core history modules: Representing the Past in Film or Exploring the Past alongside two optional history modules. All first-year film studies students take three core modules An Introduction to Film Analysis and Theory, Parts 1 and 2, and Film History which enable you to feel confident with visual analysis and theoretical approaches to cinema, and ensure that you have the understanding and vocabulary with which to develop your work in the subsequent years of your degree.
Beyond that, in your second and final years, you have a free choice of film and history modules. Film options include: American Animation History; East Asian Cinema; Analysing Television Drama; Hitchcock: Anatomy of an Auteur; Disney Studies; Spy Cinema; and a screen production project.
You will also have options from a range of broader-based modules exploring issues such as genre, authorship, national cinema and adaptation. Year 3 comprises further film studies options, but in this year the module topics are more specialised and there is a greater emphasis on independent research.
The history portion of your degree is designed to be flexible, with multiple module choices available as you progress something that our students really appreciate. Modules currently include (to name but a few) Edward I; Death and Dying in the Middle Ages; The Archaeology of the Castle; Early Modern Gender; War in European History; The British Empire; The Third Reich; Animal Histories; and Americas Wars in Asia. A full list of options can be found on our departmental web pages.
