Course programme
In Year 1 you study one core history module: Representing the Past in Film or Exploring the Past. You will also choose two History optional modules that explore big themes over specific time frames. These modules cover topics as varied as medieval life, modern-day immigration, Tudor queens and the USA. Your Religion modules explore the Buddhist tradition, including the fundamental tenets of Buddha Dhamma and the unfolding of the tradition in South and South-East Asia, China, Tibet, Korea and Japan. You will also focus on the books of the New Testament, considered in their social, cultural and historical setting.
Year 2 and 3 History modules include the core module, Thinking about the Past and other choices from a broad range of history modules -- something that our students really appreciate. Modules currently include (to name but a few) Edward I, Death and Dying in the Middle Ages, The Archaeology of the Castle, Early Modern Gender, War in European History, The British Empire, The Third Reich, Animal Histories and Americas Wars in Asia. A full list of options can be found on our departmental web pages. Second- and third-year Religion modules examine the role of the media in constructing and reflecting our beliefs; contemporary ethical issues relating to the role of science and technology; the doctrine of creation as set against scientific evidence and the doctrine of the trinity.
Later Religion modules will also explore Indian philosophy and Buddhist ethics, as well as anti-Semitism and the Holocaust.
