Single honours students take four compulsory modules - Early Modern World, Age of Revolution and Popular Protest, Rise of the Modern World, and Making History: Theory, Methods and Sources. You will take four further module credits to complete your year. You can pick your credits from our History modules or choose a wild module from another subject.Combined honours students take two compulsory modules - Making History: Theory, Methods and Sources and the Rise of the Modern World.
You will also take the compulsory modules from your other subject. You will then pick further optional modules until you have a total of eight module credits.
Year 2Single honours students need eight module credits and can choose from a wide range of courses. There are two compulsory modules - History and Documents and Historical Writing - one in each semester. The remaining modules are made up from a wide choice in which historical themes are developed, such as crime, medicine, poverty and welfare, ideas and ideology, family and gender, and nationalism and statehood.
Combined honours students have one compulsory module in the History field - History and Documents - along with three other modules of their choice.
Year 3Your final year modules are double credit modules so you can study each topic in great depth. There are eight modules offered annually (each entitled "Advanced Study in..."), which represent general thematic pathways in the History programme.
The specific content of a module is updated to reflect the growing research interests and specialisms of our historians. The eight 'Advanced Study in' modules are:
- the History of Britain, Ireland and the Empire
- Early Modern History
- the History of Ideas
- the History of Medicine
- Modern Political History
- Social and Cultural History
- the History of America
- the History of Crime.
