Course programme

Course Content In your first year you will choose five optional modules and one of our two core modules. The first year is aimed at breadth and discovery, exploring the great themes and ideas which have changed human history, which help us understand who we are, and which remain relevant today - the ideas which make history such a dynamic subject. It also offers you opportunities to explore periods, topics and regions that you may not have had the chance to study before. Our current options are:
  • The Making of Europe, 1050-1250: an introduction to the Middle Ages
  • Archaeology of Britain
  • Being Human: Friendship, Kinship and Sexuality, 1000-1600
  • Raiders, Traders and Crusaders: Medieval Maritime History
  • Elizabeth I
  • Bosworth to Yorktown: The Anglo-American World, 1485-1785
  • The European Century: People and Power c.1780-1914
  • Cities and Civilisations: Art and Archaeology in Context
  • World Archaeology
  • Asia and the World since the late 19th Century
  • Global History: World of Empires, 1500-1918
  • An Introduction to the USA
  • The Making of the Contemporary World
Instead of a single core module in the first year, we offer a choice of two. Both explore the ways in which historical events have been remembered, interpreted and used in modern culture and politics, and so look at what history means to us and how it is ever relevant in the modern world.
  • Representing the Past in Film looks at portrayals of important historical events in cinema, from medieval epics to war films and comedies.
  • Exploring the Past examines big themes such as empires, reformations, slavery and abolition, global migration, and modern genocides, from historical and contemporary perspectives.
