Course Content Year 1

This course offers a specialism in logistics set in the context of a general business management degree covering: finance, managing people, marketing, organisational behaviour, contemporary issues in organisations and strategic management. The logistics elements of the course will cover management information and logistics systems, the application of logistics in business and using logistics to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

  • Core Units Business World

    This unit will help you to understand how internal and external influences affect operational efficiency in business and what impact the business environment can have on the market. Topics covered include: cleaner design and corporate social responsibility, total quality management, pest analysis, and the Health and Safety at Work Act and the needs of the operation in complying with it.

    Finance for Business

    This unit aims to provide the aspiring manager or entrepreneur with a wide range of useful financial concepts, theories, models and techniques for both capitalist and cooperative enterprise. You will study how such financial techniques provide businesses with the budgetary planning and control systems necessary to the publication of financial statements.

    People Management in Organisations

    The purpose of the unit is to support students in their acquisition of relevant knowledge/skills pertinent to studying people management within an organisational context. The unit will cover the following themes - concept of management, modern management challenges, managing in the global arena, planning and organising, controlling and influencing.

  • Option Units Marketing Principles and Planning

    This unit examines the key principles,concepts and models relating to marketing decisions and marketing planning. The development of the marketing concept and the historical development of marketing as an academic discipline and profession. The strategic marketing planning process including analysis of the political, economic, social and technological elements of the marketing environment and the principles of segmentation, targeting and positioning. Also the elements of the marketing mix; the 7P's including the principles of product decisions and branding, pricing and promotional decisions, distribution and the services mix. Examples of the application of marketing concepts to contexts such as retail, leisure, sport, events and financial services will be analysed and discussed. Social responsibility and ethical decision making in marketing will be discussed.

    Small Business Accounting

    This unit covers the skills required to carry out the accounting functions for a small business, and the knowledge required to make business decisions based on financial information.
