Course programme

Course Content
  • Year 1

In Year 1 you will study both subjects equally. The core units in criminology provide an introduction to the study of crime, criminology and social justice. You will also be able to develop your skills in social research. Politics covers the key concepts, theories, ideas and methods and an introduction to the development of politics in the present day.

  • Year 2

In Year 2 you can continue with equal study or choose a major/minor route and so the units you will study depend on the route you have chosen.

The criminology units are concerned with the operations of the criminal justice process and criminological research methods and issues. Study currently includes criminal justice policy, the development of policing, crime and popular culture, crime and violence. Politics units cover topics such as political theory; US politics and foreign policy; international security; conflict and terrorism, the politics of Islam; the politics or arts and culture and British politics.

Criminology students may also choose units from the BA (Hons) Sociology course.

  • Year 3

In your final year you can continue with an equal study or major/minor route. A further option in the final year is named route study. If you have chosen a major/minor route in Year 2, then you could choose to focus solely on your major subject in your final year, leading to a BA (Hons) Criminology or BA (Hons) Politics degree.

In criminology you will study contemporary issues concerned with the control of crime. Study currently includes gender, crime and justice; issues in ‘deviant’ youth lifestyles; offender interventions; politics of crime and community; victims and victimology. In politics you will study topics including analysing public policy in Britain; policies and policy making in the EU; and the US and the Middle East; British foreign policy, and advanced studies on contemporary political debates such as the media and politics, technology and politics, and human rights.

You will also complete a final year project or dissertation. If you take equal study you can choose to do this unit in either criminology or politics. If you are taking a major or named route, this unit will come from the relevant subject.
