Course Content

You will study French and Italian, with the opportunity to achieve degree level fluency in both languages. You will develop transferable skills useful in the world of work, such as translating, interpreting and presentation techniques, and will discover aspects of contemporary culture and society.

Units you will study
  • Year 1

In year one, the units you will study will be determined by the language options you choose. Some of the units may be core units depending upon your chosen path.

  • Year 2

In the second year, although all the units outlined below appear as optional, you will be expected to take the advanced level for the languages you have chosen.

  • Year 3

Year three is spent in France, studying or working (eg, in a school as a Foreign Language Assistant). Your period of residence abroad will be organised by us. You will have a choice of destination and, if you study at a partner university as an Erasmus exchange student, you will receive extra financial support from the European Union. You will be visited by one of your tutors to ensure that you are settling well and satisfied with your stay. You can always get in touch with the department by phone or email.

  • Year 4

In your final year you will study a language unit for each language, an extra unit for French and write a dissertation.
