International Politics is concerned with the system through which decisions are made in the international arena with international institutions (like the World Trade Organization and the World Bank) and the relationship between these institutions and nation states. It is also about non-governmental institutions (NGOs): charities, pressure groups like Greenpeace and social movements like the World Social Forum. It is concerned with the study of power relations in the international arena amongst individuals, within social groups and amongst nation states.

Course Content

In the study of politics, historical background, socioeconomic indicators and ideological imperatives are analysed and cultural, gender and ethnic identities examined. You can study UK politics, political thought and theory, European politics, international politics and security, "issue" politics (for example, politics of hunger, environmentalism or war and peace) and comparative politics.

How does a Combined Honours degree work?

Teaching is organised in units that typically involve lectures, seminars and practical/tutorial work. Most units are assessed by a mixture of coursework and formal examination, although there are a number of units that are assessed by coursework only.

  • Year 1

    In International Politics you will be introduced to world politics, institutions and processes. You will also study European politics post World War 2.

    In year 1 you will study 30 credits of Urdu. You will learn how to exchange greetings and personal information, how to talk about food and drink and to carry out simple conversations. you will learn the writing system, pronunciation rules, models of speech, and a range of useful phrases. you will learn how to distinguish between formal and informal terms of address.

  • Year 2

    Studies in international politics currently include American government and politics, government and politics of the EU, international order and disorder, modern British politics, politics of the arts, the politics of Islam in Britain and the world.

    In Year 2 you can continue to study 30 credits of Urdu.

    You will learn expressions and structures useful for Getting around, local transportation, explaining and understanding how to get to a place, expressing requests, changing plans: apologising and giving reasons, computer and technology; tourism and accommodation, using the telephone and communicating with a customer or as a customer.

  • Year 3

    Studies in international politics currently include analysing public policy in Britain, Britain and world policy since 1918, human rights in world politics, Latin American politics, policies and policy making in the European Union, the United States and the Middle East. In addition to further study in your chosen language, option units currently include aesthetic traditions in Spanish cinema, contemporary Spain, European film noir, French speaking world, interpreting and translation, Italian literature and film, schools of linguistics, teaching English as a foreign language, and tradition and innovation in European cultures.

    You will further develop your competence in Urdu by increasing your fluency when talking about practical every day issues, enhancing your knowledge of grammar and syntax (including using a range of more sophisticated structures) and learning skills to use Urdu in professional situations.
