Course programme
You will take two modules in Italian language, one per semester, plus one year-long Italian culture module. In the first year, language modules are available at either beginners and improvers or advanced level. In the second and fourth year, all students take the same language modules. You must also take two modules in Management, one per semester, and a year-long free elective or another year-long module offered by the department. Italian culture modules include Post-War Italian History and Film, Italian History and Culture from the Enlightenment to the Present (1750-2000), and, Lies and Whispers in Italian Texts.
The first year introduces you to the study of management and organisational behaviour. You will also study a range of academic and professional skills and, as you progress, consider the management of diversity and corporate social responsibility. In your final year, you will learn about high-performing organisations and strategic leadership, especially in international and changing organisations.
The third year of the degree is spent in Italy and will probably be one of the most exciting and challenging experiences you will ever have. You will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken Italian, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into the country. The 'year', incidentally, is an 'academic year' and means at least eight months spent abroad. Students can choose to study at an exchange partner university, work in a school as a language assistant or work in industry or commerce. You also have the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit Free Elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offer the largest Free Elective Programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post A-level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
