This innovative joint degree brings together the study of two aspects of contemporary life that have huge cultural importance, in one dynamic programme of study. In the Film programme, you will be exposed to a broad range of film perspectives and filmmaking practices, learning the artistic and practical techniques which will give you a critical appreciation of this fast-paced industry. The Religion element complements this by exploring religion as a force for social change and its influence in a variety of genres including film, television and popular culture.

Course programme

Course Content

Religion and Film Studies figure equally. In the first year, students take three core Film modules: Film History • Introduction to Film Analysis • Theory 1 & 2.

In the Religion element of the first-year programme, students study key modules in Introduction to World Religions, Christian Tradition and Faith in Media.

There is a free choice of modules in the second and third years. Many students of film will be interested in some of the Religion modules that examine religion in the media, such as We R Who We R: Media, Religion, and Identity Construction or Viewing the Divine. Students have the option of a dissertation in the third year.
