Solve problems with Data Science

If you choose the Econometrics and Data Science track, you’ll combine computer science methods and statistical data analysis, ideal to tackle challenging problems in business, economics and finance.

How do sales on Amazon react to price changes? How high does a dike need to be to prevent flooding due to climate change? You’ll not only learn about things like data structures and algorithms; you’ll also learn to question what to do with data from an ethical perspective.

The Econometrics and Data Science track of the Bachelor’s programme in Econometrics and Operations Research at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is small enough for all our students to know each other and explore the depths of the subject matter. At the same time, it is big enough for you to build an extensive network that you can tap into throughout the rest of your career.

Besides attending lectures on the theory and practice of Econometrics and Data Science, you’ll also work on group assignments, solve case studies by analysing data, and get first-hand practical experience with companies. You’ll learn from people in the forefront of their field, as most teachers in the programme are actively involved in research, and some also work in business when they’re not at the university. In fact, the Econometrics and Operations Research programme – at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level – has been rated as a “topopleiding” (high-quality education) by the Keuzegids Universiteiten two years in a row.

The programme has an active study association too, adding a fun and social side to your study. Kraket organises regular careers events, inviting representatives from large companies like KLM to VU Amsterdam, and even plans trips to companies abroad.

The start date of this programme is September 1st.

Course programme

Curriculum
First year

In your first year you will receive a broad introduction to data science. You will develop your methodological skills in data analysis, linear algebra, probability, and statistics. You will receive an introduction to macroeconomics and to finance, and you will start learning how to program. You will also learn key skills such as academic writing and how to cite sources. Almost all the first-year courses for operations research and data science are the same, so it is easy to switch tracks if you discover you are more interested in operations research after having started.

Subjects
  • English Language Test
  • SAM Programme EOR
  • Analysis I
  • Colloquium 1
  • Introduction to Data Science
  • Introduction to Programming (Java)
  • Linear Algebra
  • Data Analysis 1
  • Macroeconomics I
  • Analysis II
  • Colloquium 2
  • Statistics
  • Finance I
  • Academic Skills: Probability and Inference
Second year

Your second year will build on your core foundation. You will deepen your methodological skills when it comes to econometrics, computer science, and statistics. You’ll learn how to set up and structure a database, for example, and how to create and work with algorithms. You’ll deal with statistical models for multivariate data. Plus, you’ll study the ethical dilemmas behind using data. You’ll work on real-life case studies in small groups, in which you’ll use the data analysis techniques you’ve learned to develop practical solutions. You’ll also report on and present the results of your project, learning how to give and receive feedback.

Third year

In your third year, you’ll broaden your horizons by choosing a minor – either within the faculty or outside it. Alternatively, you can study abroad at one of VU Amsterdam’s partner universities. In the second half of the year, you’ll follow in-depth courses on machine learning and multivariate econometrics, plus you’ll write a Bachelor’s thesis on a subject of your interest. For example: if a bank fails, what is the risk to other banks within the same financial system?
