Genetics is the study of the structure, function and inheritance of genes. Recent breakthroughs such as the completion of the human genome project, the exploitation of genetic manipulation in biotechnology, and the use of stem cells have made Genetics one of the dynamic and broadly relevant areas of life science. As a student of genetics in Cardiff you will study topics ranging from genetic analyses at the population level (e.g. in endangered species) to the genetic basis of disease and the use of genetics in biotechnology. Data handling exercises and laboratory practicals form a crucial part of the course, giving experience of modern genetic techniques (including genetic manipulation) and providing you the experimental and analytical skills that underpin a career in science.
