Course programme

Course Content

In Year 1 you are introduced to the fundamentals of management and organisation behaviour and provided with the skills to evaluate the external environment in which international hospitality businesses function. In addition you will be introduced to basic financial management techniques, as well as information and communications technology, and learn how these are used by industry. A distinctive aspect is our focus on your professional development through all four years of the course.

As part of your first-year Personal and Professional Development module, you will be assigned a student mentor from our final-year Leadership and Professional Development module. They will support your effective transition into university and help you understand what it means to be a professional in industry. Our first-year students will also spend time enhancing their practical skills in Brookes Restaurant and our modern kitchen.

During Year 2 you will spend your time on a paid work placement either in the UK or abroad, and our dedicated team of tutors will ensure you are matched to a placement that is suitable for you.

In Years 3 and 4 you will deepen your understanding of the core subjects of finance, marketing and human resources management, and we offer specialist core modules in Revenue and Pricing and Event Management, both of which have been recognised by industry for the invaluable skills they provide for our graduates.

The Bacchus Mentoring Programme links all final-year undergraduate students with senior, experienced executives from the international hospitality and tourism industry. You will have a dedicated mentor who provides realistic insights into the challenges and opportunities in hospitality and tourism, and can help guide you when applying for graduate jobs.

This programme has had a major impact on the learning experience of our students and many of these relationships are so strong that they continue long after students have begun their careers.

Alongside the core modules, elective modules such as Planning a Successful Event, e-Marketing for Service Businesses and Intercultural Management provide an opportunity for students to tailor their programme and to expand their knowledge base into areas that reflect their own interests and that draw on the specialist expertise of faculty members.

The modular course structure allows you to develop a personalised study programme that reflects both your personal interests and your career aspirations.
