Course programme
Year One introduces the pivotal ideas and approaches of the discipline. Single Honours Sociology students, and those doing a BScEcon Sociology Joint with another subject currently take compulsory modules.
- Sociology, Society and Social Change: this covers a range of key topics such as work, class and gender, as well as addressing global developments in contemporary societies.
- Key Ideas in Social Science traces the origins of social scientific theories and introduces the work of key thinkers in a range of social science disciplines.
- Introduction to Social Science Research introduces the principles and skills that underpin social science research.
Remaining modules comprise introductions to a selection of social science disciplines, including criminology, education, social and developmental psychology, and social policy.
Second Year ModulesSingle Honours students currently take certain core modules (marked with an asterisk) which consolidate their understanding of the disciplines theories and methodology. They complete their programme by choosing modules from a varied list which offers them many opportunities to Develop specialised knowledge and expertise

The final year modules are informed by cutting edge research-based teaching and they reflect the sociological strengths within the school. Most sociology students will complete a dissertation in a special field of interest and all sociology students (single and joint) currently take at least at least three modules from this list:
