Course programme

Course Content Years 1 and 2

You take core physics modules in topics including:

  • The Classical World
  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Quantum Mechanics
  • Physics of Waves
  • Mechanics and Thermodynamics.

You study calculus, vector and linear algebra, and differential equations. Key skills are developed alongside and integrated within these courses to expand your knowledge of computers, data analysis, some lab work and presentational skills. A global challenge module provides opportunity to tackle real world problems in an interdisciplinary team. Up until the end of Year 2, you have the opportunity to transfer between the BSc and MPhys courses.

Final Honours Year

You take advanced theoretical topics reflecting the wide range of modern physics for example:

  • Nuclear and Particle Physics
  • Advanced Quantum Mechanics
  • Matter at Extremes
  • Classical Mechanics
  • Numerical modelling and Simulation
  • Partial Differential Equations.

You plan and carry out your final year BSc project in consultation with a supervisor. Examples of recent final-year projects include:

  • Gauge Theory
  • Monte Carlo Simulation of Colloidal Particles Confined to Two Dimension.
