Our four-year MPlan degree leads to an undergraduate Master of Planning, Newcastle University qualification that satisfies the RTPI educational requirements for Chartered Town Planner status. Our three-year Urban Planning BA Honours degree is also professionally accredited by the RTPI and offers a rewarding insight into urban planning and key environmental issues. You may use this qualification as a route into planning later in your career, following specialist postgraduate study. It can also be a launch pad into many other exciting professions.

Course Content

Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Please be aware that programme modules do change and therefore may differ for your year of entry.

Stage 1

You may choose to leave the programme at the end of Stage 3 and will be awarded a degree in Urban Planning BA Honours.

If you wish to continue on the MPlan route, you have the opportunity to gain the Certificate in Planning Practice between Stages 3 and 4 of this degree. The Certificate consists of a professional practice placement, lasting one year full time. See the Course Overview for details.

After completing the Certificate, you return to the University for Stage 4 of the MPlan degree.
